The Mental Health and Resiliency Department works to confront one of the most overlooked threats to human rights work: the psychological toll it takes on those who lead it.

Drawing on research in trauma, moral injury, and resilience, both from our own efforts through the Research and Evaluation Department and from studies conducted worldwide, we develop interventions that support not only the mental health of individual defenders but also the long-term sustainability of their work. Our trauma-informed, evidence-based programming is grounded in the lived realities of frontline advocates.

Current Initiative: Healing Racial Trauma Initiative (HRTI)

  • Healing Racial Trauma Initiative (HRTI) envisions a future in which racial trauma is recognized as a core human rights issue. Rooted in community, science, and justice, HRTI seeks to illuminate and address the pain and trauma of direct and indirect manifestations of violence within systems of racialized oppression. As part of Mindbridge’s Mental Health and Resiliency Department, HRTI collaborates with clinicians, community practitioners, and human rights defenders to deepen their understanding of racial trauma, strengthen culturally congruent care, and lay the foundation for long-term collective healing.

  • The Healing Racial Trauma Advisory Committee is a committed group of mental health specialists and culturally grounded healers who guide the development of Mindbridge’s Healing Racial Trauma Initiative (HRTI). Rooted in research, community dialogue, and lived experience, the committee provides critical insight into the design and implementation of group healing pilots and educational tools for People of Color (POC). This advisory body ensures that HRTI’s approach remains trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and community-driven.
